Preparing your home for a new puppy can be very challenging, but it will make life a lot easier for you if you know exactly how to make your home an inviting space for your pup right from the start. Here are some of the major things you need to do to make your home an inviting place.

Create a Safe Space

Puppies are naturally curious and they want to explore every corner of your house but in the beginning you cannot let them. To keep them safe you need to puppy proof your home by removing or securing any potential hazardous that you know of.

The first thing you need to do is get down to their level so that you can look around to see where the dangers are. See the things that they can chew or swallow and then you need to take measures to prevent this from happening.

Electrical cords must be tucked away or covered so that your puppy cannot get to them. Make sure that you are putting away essential supplies. Your puppy will need certain essentials from the very start. Make sure you have the following ready for them.

Food and Water Bottles

Food and water bottles made of ceramic or stainless steel are very important because they are durable and easy to clean.

Puppy Food

Make sure you are treating high quality puppy food that is appropriate for your dog’s breed and size. If you’re not sure what you do then consult a vet to get recommendations.

Crate

It’s a good idea to have a crate ready as it can help you with potty training and provide your puppy with a safe place to retreat. It should be large enough for them to stand, turn around and lie down comfortably.

Leash and Collar

Having a leash and collar ready is a necessity for walks as well as training your puppy. Make sure that you have ID tags attached to their collar so that people can contact you in case they are lost and found.

Plan for Training

All puppies need training in order to understand what is expected of them. While you can do potty training alone you might find it a little more tedious to do other training that will make your dog more obedient. If this is the case, you can always hire a dog trainer to assist you.

A dog trainer can help make the learning process a lot faster and you will get to enjoy an obedient pet a lot more quickly. This can reduce frustration and allow your pets to fit into your home a lot more safely.

If you’re ready to help your dog live the best life possible then you should be getting prepared. There are many things to do when you are about to get a puppy and you want to make sure that you do them in a timely manner so that you are not overwhelmed when you finally pick up your pet.
